Alessandra Usai is a researcher, director, and producer whose cinematic journey began in 1999 when she left Sardinia for Milan, graduating in Letters and Philosophy with a specialization in the History of Cinema. After attending a film criticism workshop, she enrolled in the documentary specialization course at the Civic School of Cinema in Milan.
Since 2011, Alessandra has made notable contributions to filmmaking, captivating audiences with her distinctive storytelling and commitment to portraying untold narratives. She directed her debut period drama, "Ladies of Birr Castle," in 2012, showcasing her talent at the Underground Film Festival in Dublin in 2013.
Her historical storytelling passion continued with the 2014 project, "Ladies of Science," a groundbreaking documentary earning awards at international festivals. In 2016, she founded "Women Filmmakers in Dublin" to empower women in cinema.
In 2017, Alessandra achieved directorial success with the short film "Jambite," winning Best Actress at the International Film of Milan in November 2018. Returning to Sardinia, she established Nical Films.
Between 2019 and 2020, she directed "The Miracle of Sinners," a docufiction about the largest agricultural penal colony in Italy. The film received global acclaim, securing awards and being broadcasted by RAI in 2023. By 2024, major streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Tubi Film acquired the documentary, with its DVD release reaching libraries across the United States.
Alessandra Usai's influence extends beyond her directorial work. As a producer, she contributed to the success of animated short film "S’Ozzastru," selected at Alice nella città, part of the Rome Film Festival. Currently, she remains actively engaged in her roles as both a producer and director, with her latest project focusing on the impactful theme of acidification, featuring Filomena Lamberti shot between Italy and Pakistan.
